Jon McConnell, Doorman at The Saint Paul Hotel, graciously shares,

"I’ve had the honor of welcoming guests to this iconic destination for nearly 34 years—next month marks my anniversary. Every day, I take pride in being the first face guests see when they arrive, setting the tone for their stay with warmth, professionalism, and a smile."

Jon continues, "Downtown Saint Paul has been at the heart of my life for over three decades. Through my work at The Saint Paul Hotel, I’ve witnessed the city evolve while staying rooted in its timeless charm.”

“It’s more than just a place I work—it’s a part of who I am… There’s so much to love—its architecture, the traditions, the energy—but what stands out most to me are the people. I’ve met visitors from around the world and locals who’ve become friends. There’s a rhythm to this place that feels both grand and personal, and that’s something special.”

Jon is thoughtful about how Saint Paul can be better, “More opportunities for people to slow down and connect—more seating, more community spaces, more simple moments that bring people together. Sometimes it's the small improvements that make the biggest difference.”

Jon continues, "I see a future that blends progress with tradition. Downtown Saint Paul will continue to grow and modernize, but what makes it special—its people and legacy—will remain at its core. My role is to keep that sense of welcome alive, one guest at a time, offering consistency and kindness in a world that moves fast."

"My favorite spot is standing in the breezeway of The Saint Paul Hotel, looking out over Rice Park. From that vantage point, I get to take in the beauty of the seasons—autumn leaves, twinkling holiday lights, spring blooms—and watch the rhythm of the city unfold. It’s where I welcome guests, offer directions, share stories, and witness both quiet moments and joyful celebrations. That view has been part of my daily life for nearly 34 years, and it never gets old."

Jon makes the world a better place with, "A kind word. A held door. A warm greeting on a cold morning. These things may seem small, but I’ve seen how they can brighten someone’s entire day. I try to offer that kindness every day I put on my coat and hat."
