Sanni Brown, host of 'The Message' on The Current as well as Carbon Sound, tells us about her experience when she first moved to Saint Paul in 1993,

“Culture shock. It's significantly slower here than Chicago, BUT I will say as I have grown to love that about Saint Paul as I've matured. Don't nobody wanna fight for parking everywhere they go and that's exactly what you have to do in Chicago. I LOVE the parking situation here. It's something not a lot of people would notice if they didn't come from a big city…”

“I remember living in Dorothy Day shelter as well as Naomi Family Center, the shelter that is located directly across from MPR. I remember when I first started working here, I felt a sense of accomplishment because it's a reminder of where I came from. MPR was one of the first buildings I noticed when I first moved to MN as well.”

Sanni has a unique response when asked what she loves about Downtown Saint Paul, “I love my history with Downtown and my connection to it. So much of what I do is inspired by what I experienced when I first moved here from Chicago…”

“Music was insane then, too. The first thing I clung to when I moved here was the Music. It was me and my boombox. If I wasn't taping my voice and pretending to be a Radio personality, I would be blasting it and dancing to it with my Barbies.”

"I am unsure what the future of Saint Paul looks like. I believe I play a part in the future of Downtown Saint Paul with the work I do in the media. I know the future must include unbiased media in order to forge a more informed populace, I KNOW that much."

When asked how Downtown Saint Paul be better, Sanni simply says,

"Consider everyone you meet. You might be running into your next Radio Host."

Thank You for sharing your inspiring Saint Paul Story with us, Sanni! I think it's important to note that Sanni is also a Singer, Dancer, and award-winning Lyricist (Rap Tech Student of the Year 2025!). Sanni is also in preparation to drop her FIRST EP 'Late Bloomer: The Making of Big Cutie' as well as her first rap project 'The Big Cutie Mixtape,' both coming later this year.

We'll be looking for those drops, Sanni🎶
